A Tale of Two Cities, by Charles Dickens – read by various volunteers
Charles Dickens’s A Tale of Two Cities (first published in 1859) is a sweeping historical novel set against the turmoil of the French Revolution. Opening with the famous line, “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times…,” the book explores themes of injustice, sacrifice, and redemption in both London and Paris.
The story follows two men—Charles Darnay, a French aristocrat who rejects the cruelty of his class, and Sydney Carton, a disillusioned English lawyer. Though strikingly similar in appearance, they lead very different lives until fate entwines them with Lucie Manette, the woman they both love. As the Revolution erupts and violence consumes France, their choices reveal the depth of courage and the possibility of renewal.
Blending history, drama, and moral reflection, A Tale of Two Cities remains one of Dickens’s most powerful and enduring works.
